    SCIA Delegation Visits European Universities

    From 28 May to 2 June 2023, Dr. Liu Xiaochun, President of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (hereinafter the “SCIA”) & Executive Chairman of the South China International Arbitration Center (Hong Kong) (hereinafter the “SCIAHK”), led a delegation to visit Universities of Aix-Marseille Université, Sapienza University of Rome, and Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Discussions were made during the visit on academic exchanges for international arbitration and the development of international legal talents. The visit reached consensus on cooperation in many regards.

    Dr. Yuan Gujie, Chairman of the Guangdong Province Law Society (hereinafter the “GPLS”), Mr. Zhang Qinghong, Vice Chairman of the GPLS, and Mr. Sun Taiping, Chairman of the Guangzhou Law Society also attended the visit.

    Aix-Marseille Université is now the most populous university in France that developed out of the original University of Provence, founded in 1409 by Louis II of Provence. Within France, the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the university is one of largest law schools and recognized as one of the leading center for research and teaching in law.

    The Europe-Asia Research Institute (hereinafter “EARI”), as an institution of the faculty, is directed by Mr. JIN Banggui. EARI has fostered and maintained academic exchanges between China and France for years.

    University of Rome (in full University of Rome “La Sapienza”), founded in 1303, is one of the oldest universities in the world, now also the largest university in Italy and the third largest in all of Europe. It has acquired a prominent position in Italy and is known for its high-quality research, education, and international cooperation among other universities.

    The University’s oldest and largest school, the Faculty of Law and Political Science has a strong faculty and scholars with a distinguished international reputation. The delegation was greeted at the faculty and engaged in depth discussions with Professor Oliviero Diliberto, Dean of the Faculty, former Italian Minister of Justice, former leader of the Party of Italian Communists, and a former member of the Italian Parliament.

    Erasmus University Rotterdam (hereinafter “EUR”), named after the famous Dutch humanist thinker of the Middle Ages, Desiderius Erasmus, is located in the city of Rotterdam.

    EUR is a highly ranked university with alumni of outstanding figures, including Jane Tinbergen, Nobel laureate in economics, Jan Peter Balkenende, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Barend Bischuvel, former IMF Managing Director, Supachai Panipaddi, former Director General of the World Trade Organization and Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

    Professor Peter Malanczuk, Council Member of SCIA and Director of SCIAHK, served as a chair professor for international law and the Dean of the Erasmus School of Law.

    Erasmus China Law Center, directed by Professor Li Yuwen, is an important achievement of Sino-European research for comparative legal studies. The Center promoted Chinese law research and education in the Netherlands for years and bridged between EUR and Chinese universities and research institutions. It remarks the significance of legal cooperation and academic exchanges between China and Netherlands, and the European Union in large.
