    The SCIA + SCIA HK Dual Qualification Advanced Practical Training Program in International Commercial Arbitration is Held in Shenzhen and Hong Kong SAR


    The SCIA + SCIA HK Dual Qualification Advanced Practical Training Program in International Commercial Arbitration (hereinafter referred to as “the training program”), jointly organized by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA) and the South China International Arbitration Center (HK) (SCIA HK), was held in Shenzhen and Hong Kong during July 3rd to 5th, 2024. The training program have garnered support from the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Guangdong Lawyers Association, the Guangzhou Lawyers Association, the Shenzhen Lawyers Association, and the Guangdong, Hong Kong & Macao Arbitration & Mediation Alliance, among other legal organizations. Barristers, solicitors and in-house counsels from Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Dalian, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, a total of 36 participants including student volunteers attended the three-day English-only program. The training program is also the third session of the SCIA International Arbitration Training Program for Elite Lawyers in the Greater Bay Area (SCIA IATP).


    The training program focused on key hearing procedures in international commercial arbitration such as opening statements, cross-examination and closing statements. Renowned experts in various areas of law from the United States and Hong Kong SAR were invited to give lectures on-site, including Anselmo Reyes, SC, SCIA Arbitrator, International Judge at Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and Former Judge of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR, Marcus Quintanilla, an independent arbitrator and mediator, counsel of international commercial dispute in technology, energy and construction sectors and arbitrator at the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association (AAA-ICDR), Kim Rooney, SCIA Arbitrator, Barrister in the Hong Kong SAR and President of the Arbitration Committee of the Hong Kong Bar Association, and Mylene Chan, a Visiting Faculty of Peking University School of Transactional Law.


    Through theoretical lectures, case studies, group discussions, practical simulations and luncheon sessions, the training program offered both theories and practical skills of international commercial arbitration. The experts also shared practical experience and insights in international commercial arbitration and provided useful guidance for professionals engaged in this field. Participants received the “SCIA + SCIA HK Dual Qualification” certificates upon completion of the training program. 12 outstanding trainees were selected and will have the opportunity to deeply participate in various professional seminars and exchange activities organized by the SCIA and the SCIA HK, and engage in diverse dispute resolution practices including arbitration, mediation and negotiation facilitation.


    Since its establishment in 1983, the SCIA has steadfastly adhered to its core principle of “party-autonomy” and committed to upholding the values of openness, inclusivity, independence, impartiality, and innovation. The SCIA endeavors to cultivate a collaborative platform for legal practitioners and the business community to engage in collective discourse, creation, and knowledge-sharing. Thereby, it serves as a catalyst for the advancement of international arbitration within China. In the future, the SCIA will continue to organize a variety of training seminars and workshops in cooperation with the legal industry to enhance the legal service ecosystem, and to build a globally oriented international commercial arbitration hub by leveraging the strengths of the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR.

    Dr. Liu Xiaochun, President of the SCIA and Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of the SCIA HK, delivered the welcome speech.

    Anselmo Reyes, SC, SCIA Arbitrator, International Judge at Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and Former Judge of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR, gave lectures.

    Kim Rooney, SCIA Arbitrator, Barrister in the Hong Kong SAR and President of the Arbitration Committee of the Hong Kong Bar Association delivered lectures.


    Mylene Chan, Visiting Faculty of Peking University School of Transactional Law delivered lectures.


    Huang Guoyong, Director of the International Cooperation and Development Department of the SCIA and Director of the Jiangmen Centre, introduced the latest developments in international arbitration in China from the perspective of the SCIA.


    Li Xiongfeng, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Development Department of the SCIA and Deputy Secretary-General of the SCIA HK, shared insights into the practice of international commercial arbitration in the Hong Kong SAR.


    The arbitral tribunal, consisted of Anselmo Reyes, SC (presiding arbitrator), Marcus Quintanilla and Huang Guoyong in the mock arbitration hearing session.
